UFC Fight Night 184: Overeem vs. Volkov Picks and Predictions

Picks and Predictions for UFC Fight Night Overeem vs. Volkov

Shawn Craymen

The first Fight Night card in a few weeks! The night before Super Bowl Sunday the UFC is delivering a nice card with some fun fights and great value bets. Legends like Michael Johnson, Frankie Edgar, and Alistair Overeem are featured.

Michael Johnson vs. Clay Guida

I told myself I’d stop betting on Michael Johnson, until now. This one is just too easy. Guida is high activity and has good grappling and clinch work but there’s nothing he does that Johnson can’t defend. MJ is also a far better striker. A nice clean win for Michael Johnson in this one.

Johnson: -225

Frankie Edgar vs. Cory Sandhagen

UFC legend and former 155 pound champion Frankie Edgar is going up against stud who is six inches taller than him and 10 years young. Sandhagen styled on Marlon Moraes his last time out so he should do the same thing against old man Frankie, right? No. Sandhagen has swiss cheese takedown defense which is exactly where Frankie excels even at this point in his career. While all fights start standing and Sandhagen has a great advantage in this department, Frankie is gonna close the distance, get it to the mat, and pound Cory through the canvas.

Edgar: +325

Alistair Overeem vs. Alexander Volkov

Overeem is coming into this main event winning four (and arguably five) of his last five fights. Overeem said he’s nearing retirement and is making one last run at the UFC belt that has eluded him for so long. Volkov comes into this coming off a KO win against Walt Harris trying to make a title run of his own. Past performances point to Overeem’s loss against 6’7" Travis Browne so many years ago meaning he’ll struggle against Volkov who’s also 6’7". While I could see people thinking Volkov will use his length to stick and move and use front kicks to keep Overeem at bay, I really don’t see that happening. Overeem is currently the best he’s been in his career aside from 2011 when he was the simultaneous K1 and Strikeforce champion and built like an action figure. Overeem’s movement, grappling, and overall striking ability will allow him to eventually overcome Volkov over 25 minutes of fight time. Expect a great performance by an extremely motivated Overeem.

Overeem: +170
