Featuring Ty Dolla $ign Album Review - Ty Dolla $ign

Ty Dolla $ign’s long list of features results in a surprisingly solid fourth studio album.

Andrew Schwartz

Full disclosure, I’m not a huge Ty Dolla $ign fan. Most of the time I’m only listening to him because he’s featured on another artist’s track. With that being said, this album shines as a product of its title. Featuring Ty Dolla $ign is at its best when the LA artist collaborates with others. Some of the features include Kanye West, Post Malone, Big Sean, Kid Cudi, Nicki Minaj, Roddy Rich, Future, Young Thug, Quavo, and more. That lineup alone is jam-packed with stars and almost makes you wonder how much Ty had to shell out to get this album done.

When you’re this rich I guess it doesn’t really matter.

My Top 3 Tracks

3. Tyrone 2021 (feat. Big Sean)

If you read my album review for Benny the Butcher’s Burden of Proof you’d already know I’m a huge fan of vocal chops. This track masterfully utilizes a few different vocal samples. It’s more laid back compared to some of the other songs on the album, with Big Sean delivering a solid verse.

2. Track 6 (feat. Kanye West, Anderson .Paak & Thundercat)

This has got to be the most unique track on the album. I attribute that to the features. Kanye comes in for a simple verse that actually sounds more like a hook and kills it. The song structure here keeps the track interesting, especially during Anderson .Paak’s verse. The beat switches up for more of a funky vibe that complements him well.

1. Spicy (feat. Post Malone)

Post Malone always comes with the hits, and this track is no different. With an album that’s heavily reliant on features, it was almost a given that this one wouldn’t disappoint. I can’t even think of a track with Post Malone that I wouldn’t want to listen to. He blesses every track he has the opportunity to sing on. His verse is exactly what you’d expect with that signature Post sound, and Ty is solid here as well. His chorus is sure to get stuck in your head for days after listening.

Album Rating: 7.9/10

Ty Dolla $ign’s self-awareness is the only reason this album is as good as it is. Being an artist that’s heavily reliant on features, Ty went above and beyond with a star-studded list of artists and producers to make sure this album wouldn’t flop.

Honorable Mentions

Freak (feat. Quavo)

Expensive (feat. Nicki Minaj)

Temptations (feat. Kid Cudi)
